Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

March 25, 1942 The big white ranch house was not too far from town and easily visible from the road, just as he’d been told when he’d asked for directions.  Nobody had said that there’d be around a...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

That was a fun read. Nice to know I was right about the identity of the "Old Man". I hadn't though about O'Brien not getting paid in so long, but looking back, it's been a while since he went anywhere...

Another very good establishing chapter, with Chet Nimitz thrown in for good measure. I like it! BTW, IIRC in Texas Wiedenfeller is spelled Weidenfeller. Served in Basic Training with a bloke from near...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

A leader is a leader whether or not he wears a uniform or holds official rank. And Chester Nimitz was a leader. I suppose I should observe that, in OTL, S&W didn't adopt model numbers until 1957....

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

What made Nimitz extraordinary was the way in which he combined all of those qualities - leader, thinker, worker - into one man. I had the chance to visit the Nimitz Museum in Fredericksburg several...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

I'm sure it's spelled both ways, German cum American spelling being what it is. It's only that Airman Basic Weidenfeller made such a big deal of it that it stuck in my mind. He insisted that it was...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

Hmm, but what kind of numbers can the Texans in O'Brien's general vicinity put together? Surely not too many because most able-bodied men would have been conscripted?

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

I think this is O'B's first scene in a while that he hasn't at least threatened harm to someone? And he's getting paid in gold. So Nimitz = Santa? Good stuff as ever, WB.

One wonders how long before Nimitz figures out what he has on his hands.Little's vague orders and Garrison's relaying him out into the wilds pretty much cuts off (in the short term) the trail O'B has...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

Nimitz was a leader (a leader of leaders, for sure) and he may be the one to slow OBrien down a bit and mature him, in a way that has not happened before. It seems to me that OBrien has been off on...

Re: Hartford World: The Arsenal of Democracy, Part III

I'm not sure O'Brien's got that much of a past to catch up with him, evidence-wise. Most of the people who've witnessed him at his worst aren't around to testify. Westmoreland is complicit, as is...

I suspect Nimitz will cook up a limited mission to get a handle on the relative value of this stranger.Send O'Brien, his Coonhound (with Berti on the gun) and a handful of militia out to harrass the...
